T-Mobile 665 provides low-end value to prepaid

T Mobile665 T Mobile 665 provides low end value to prepaid

It’s rare when we see a new prepaid phone announcement that is not a smartphone. Yet here we are. Pictured above is the T-Mobile 665, which is now available from T-Mobile prepaid. As the picture suggests, it’s not much to write home about. It does have a media player, though, along with a 2-megapixel camera. It’s available now for $ 49.99 at T-Mobile’s website.

Voyager Mobile advertises big, but launch delayed

Yesterday I read something about Voyager Mobile, a new MVNO of the Sprint network. With few MVNO launches every one seems to be something of an event. Yet Voyager seemed to be onto something. They advertised two plans: unlimited talk and text for $ 19 per month, and unlimited talk, text, and data for $ 39 per month. Even better, they planned to sell high-end Sprint Android devices, including 4G devices that use WiMax. They had planned to launch this morning at VoyagerMobile.com, and I was excited to see ho they laid everything out. Unfortunately, the launch did not happen, and it’s starting to sound fishy.

AT&T and Leap continue to talk Cricket deal

Merger and acquisition rumors are nothing new in the prepaid realm. Years ago a month wouldn’t go by where we didn’t hear someone speculating on a MetroPCs-Cricket merger. In the last few years we’ve heard little on that front, though. Instead, we hear about bigger companies trying to acquire these regional carriers. Last week we learned that T-Mobile was talking merger with MetroPCS. A few months ago we heard that AT&T was talking acquisition with Cricket. Late last week Reuters published a report restating AT&T’s interest in Leap Wireless. The talks were held “in recent months,” according to the report, so it’s unclear if anything new has developed since February. But given the general lack of spectrum and the value it holds to the biggest carriers, we could see further movement on these fronts. It would not be a surprise to see larger carriers purchase both MetroPCS and Cricket in 2012.

America Movil, parent of Tracfone, acquires Simple Mobile

It appears that America Movil’s U.S. operation has just grown. According to a Reuters report, America Movil has acquired Simple Mobile in a deal worth about $ 100 million. Simple now joins Tracfone, Net10, and Straight Talk as Movil’s U.S. brands. A Barclay’s report notes that with the addition of Simple, America Movil now accounts for about 30 percent of U.S. prepaid subscribers. It’s unclear if this will bring any chances to Simple Mobile. It is an MVNO of the T-Mobile network, but America Movil uses spectrum from all four major carriers with its other brands. We should learn more when the deal closes, which should be in the next few months.

T-Mobile gains on strength of prepaid

It’s a familiar story: T-Mobile lost postpaid customers in the first quarter of 2012: 510,000 to be exact. But they actually gained 187,000 customers on the whole. Yes, they posted big gains in prepaid. It amounts to 249,000 subscribers added to T-Mobile branded prepaid offerings, and a whopping 449,000 to wholesale subscribers. As we’ve been saying for a while now, T-Mobile prepaid is really keeping the company afloat right now. They managed to do better than a number of prepaid carriers, including MetroPCS. We recently learned that T-Mobile and MetroPCS have been holding merger talks.

T-Mobile releases prepaid payment Android app

As we know, T-Mobile has put a greater emphasis on prepaid in the last year or so. Their Monthly 4G plans afford prepaid users the opportunity to get a plan that is pretty much the same as postpaid, only they don’t need to sign contracts or undergo credit checks. They can even get powerful Android handsets. Now those Android customers have another perk: T-Mobile has introduced an Android app that allows users to pay their bills directly. It’s nothing big, but something that will make life a lot easier for Monthly 4G Android customers. You can download the app at Google Play.

T-Mobile doubles prepaid subscribers from last year

Every three months we see carriers report their earnings and subscribers figure. When we started with prepaid reviews in 2007, it was Sprint that consistently lost customers every quarter. Now that has passed to T-Mobile. Yet there is something positive for T-Mobile. As T-Mobile prepaid boss Mike Katz notes in a blog post, the company has doubled its prepaid numbers in the last year, on the strength of Monthly 4G. Even better, 60 percent of those new Monthly 4G customers are picking up smartphones, which means more revenue for the troubled carrier. Katz goes on to note that the company’s focus is on the more lucrative postpaid sector, but it’s clear that prepaid has kept T-Mobile afloat in the past year and change. They’re giving regional prepaid carriers a run for their money.

Straight Talk to offer Verizon-powered Samsung Galaxy Proclaim

Samsung Galaxy Proclaim Straight Talk to offer Verizon powered Samsung Galaxy Proclaim

It’s really amazing how Straight Talk continues to expand. Last year they began offering smartphone service via Sprint’s CDMA network. They’ve unveiled a number of Android handsets to go along with that offering, including the LG Optimus Q, the Samsung Galaxy Precedent, and the LG Optimus Black. Now, not even a week after Verizon prepaid began offering an $ 80 smartphone plan, Straight Talk has picked up a Verizon phone, the Samsung Galaxy Proclaim, for its network. It certainly creates a new level of competition.

MVNO Ting might buy out your postpaid contract

Ting MVNO Ting might buy out your postpaid contract

The above photo is a promotion from Ting, an MVNO of the Sprint network. Each day this month they’re going to pick one person and let him or her out of a postpaid mobile phone contract. All you have to do is visit Ting’s Dump Your Contract Month site and fill out the form. Each person is limited to one entry per day, and Ting will pay any early termination fee of up to $ 300. That’s a pretty sweet deal. After reading the official rules, it doesn’t appear that the winners are obligated to purchase Ting’s prepaid wireless services. Though, if you’re out of your contract you might consider it. They have some interesting deals.
